PLOS Pathogens welcomes Michael Malim as Joint Editor in Chief

PLOS is pleased to welcome Professor Michael Malim as co-Editor in Chief of PLOS Pathogens as of December 2019. Having joined the PLOS Pathogens editorial board in 2004, and serving as a Section Editor for HIV and Retroviruses prior to this appointment, Mike’s expertise will be a great asset to the Pathogens community going forward.

Professor Malim is based at King’s College London, where he is Professor of Infectious Diseases and the Head of the School of Immunology & Microbial Sciences. His work focuses predominantly on the molecular pathogenesis of HIV-1 and influenza A virus, exploring virus replication and host-mediated control.

One longstanding area of interest began when Mike joined the Department of Microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania as his group began work on a potent regulator of HIV-1 infectivity, Vif. By identifying the human protein APOBEC3G that is targeted by Vif, they discovered a novel mechanism of innate immunity whereby APOBEC3 proteins both inhibit viral cDNA synthesis and disrupt viral genetic integrity through DNA editing.

Mike is also Director of the MRC Doctoral Training Partnership in Biomedical Sciences at KCL, and Theme Lead for Infection and Immunity in the Biomedical Research Centre at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. On a national level, Mike is currently Vice President (Non-Clinical) at the Academy of Medical Sciences. He has received both an Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Scientist Award and the KT Jeang Retrovirology Prize for contributions within his field.

PLOS Pathogens is excited to have Mike on board and looks forward to working to drive his vision for the journal.
