This Week in PLoS Medicine: MSMs risk behavior; IT & heart health; Social inequalities in cardiovascular care

Three new articles were published this week in PLoS Medicine covering risk behaviors, assessment and treatment in varying populations.

In a randomized trial of a behavioral intervention aimed at reducing sexual risk behaviour among substance-using men who have sex with men, Gordon Mansergh and colleagues fail to find evidence of a reduction in risk from the intervention.

Robyn Whittaker and colleagues argue that IT-based programs can improve cardiovascular disease management and patient empowerment, but must be accompanied by supportive social and political environments and active patient and clinician engagement.

Simon Capewell and Hilary Graham review different population strategies for preventing cardiovascular disease and conclude that screening and treating high-risk individuals may be ineffective and actually widen social inequalities.
