Science Behind-the-Scenes, a series to match the stories with the storymakers

Synthetic biology research delivers interesting stories, some of which you can find on this blog and other outlets. The press coverage often revolves around the results and the potential applications. And the senior authors of the studies may share their insights on the outcomes.

But there is a tendency to ignore the lead authors of the studies, the students and postdocs who perform most of the research and have a unique perspective on how the work was performed.

In this interview series, we will try to correct this overlook. Niko McCarty, a PhD student in Bioengineering at the California Institute of Technology and synthetic biology writer has picked a few exciting research articles and contacted the first author(s).
