SynBioBeta SF 2016 Preview

Next month, Synbiobeta is coming to San Francisco for the 5th Annual SynBioBeta SF 2016 (#SBBSF16). Like other Synbiobeta events it tries to bring together the industrial and academic players in the synthetic biology field to jumpstart conversations among all parts of the community. You can check out our coverage of the SynBioBeta SF 2015 for an idea of what you can get out of the meeting.

The conference will be from Oct. 4-6th and you can still register. As a PLOS Synbio reader you can use our code and get 20% Off Registration using PLOS20OFF! This is one of the key meetings for synthetic biologists and the most focused on the commercial synthetic biology industry.

They’re marketing the the meeting to all members of the synbio community: tech practitioners, industry and startups, investors and angels, technology scouts, academics and students or biohackers. In 2015 our PLOS Synbio contributor, Grant Vousden-Dishington, said that “great deal of the meeting was dedicated to the best strategies for creating a thriving synthetic biology company” and “shortage of topics within synthetic biology to discuss”.

This focus on converting synbio ideas into impactful companies gives SynBioBeta SF a distinction from most traditional academic conferences. Funding for synthetic biology companies has increased in recent years and there looks to be opportunities in the young field for new companies to make an impact.

In addition to talks there will also be networking opportunities, workshops, and the 2nd annual Engineering Biology awards. Each of these award winners will be among the featured speakers.

Workshops will be on DNA synthesis, information technology, seed funding for startups, and robotic cloud labs, and CRISPR libraries. Other topics of particular focus will be the future of food, biosecurity, engineered cell therapies, DNA storage, and public engagement.
