PLOS BLOGS The Official PLOS Blog

Congrats to Pat and Joe

Joe DeRisi was just awarded the Alumni Achievement Award from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Joe is a terrific supporter of open access, and he and his collaborators have published a number of outstanding papers in PLoS journals, for example on malaria , prostate cancer and chromosome biology in yeast. The announcement about Joe’s award highlights his commitment to open sharing of scientific discoveries. (Thanks to Peter Suber’s blog)

And that’s not all. Pat Brown, one of the inspirational Founders of PLoS, was also recently awarded the prestigious Medal of Honor for Basic Research from the American Cancer Society. The announcement highlights Pat’s contributions to “making automatic microarray analysis technology easily accessible”. Pat’s also published some great work in PLoS journals, for example about gene expression signatures in cancer, but it will be interesting to see whether his outstanding scientific accomplishments are eclipsed by his contributions to the broader accessibility of scientific information as a whole.

Many congratulations to Pat and Joe!
