It’s the little things in life: Microbiology at PLOS

Microbiology – the study of small, but mighty microscopic organisms – is an expansive and complex discipline fundamental to basic and applied life sciences research. Whether a scientist is investigating the impacts of bracoviruses on the genomes of moths and butterflies or using viral sequencing to trace the origins of a Zika outbreak in the Caribbean, the microbe remains at the center of their research.

PLOS has launched a special Editor’s Picks: Microbiology Collection to showcase the variable and often intersecting microbial sciences research published across our journals. The Microbiology Collection was curated by PLOS ONE Senior Editor Meg Byrne, and features research in fields that will also be highlighted at the ASM Microbe 2016 Conference, including: applied and environmental science, clinical science and epidemiology, ecological and evolutionary science, host-microbe biology, molecular biology and physiology, and therapeutics and prevention.

Microbiology AMAs

We will be featuring two microbiology papers in our upcoming PLOS Science Wednesday Ask Me Anything (AMA) series on redditscience. All AMAs are live on 1pm EST (10am PST) the day they are scheduled. Check back on this blog for direct links to the AMAs, which will also be shared on Twitter the day of the AMA.

On Weds June 1, PLOS ONE author Nicholas Money will be answering questions on his popular study “Mushrooms as Rainmakers: How Spores Act as Nuclei for Raindrops”, also featured in the PLOS Microbiology Collection. Here is a link to the AMA.

And on Weds June 15, PLOS Pathogens authors Lucy Bell and Mahdad Noursadeghi are leading an AMA on their paper “In Vivo Molecular Dissection of the Effects of HIV-1 in Active Tuberculosis”. Bell also wrote a post in Speaking of Medicine building off the paper findings and sharing cutting-edge research around treatment for tuberculosis.

Past AMAs for papers featured in the Microbiology Collection include:

Weds June 24 2015 AMA with PLOS ONE authors Miriam Barlow and Juan C. Meza on their paper, “Rational Design of Antibiotic Treatment Plans: A Treatment Strategy for Managing Evolution and Reversing Resistance”.

Weds Nov. 4 2015 AMA with PLOS Genetics authors Jean-Michel Drezen, Salva Herrero, Elisabeth Huguet on their paper, “Recurrent Domestication by Lepidoptera of Genes from Their Parasites Mediated by Bracoviruses”.

PLOS Welcomes Your Microbiology Research

In recognition that advancing scientific discovery in microbial sciences is critical to addressing enduring health and environmental challenges, PLOS calls for microbiologists to submit their papers for open and rapid dissemination of findings.
