Inside Knowledge aims to expose the beauty and tension behind scientific research. Through multimedia projects and written features, we will explore aspects of science which the public don’t always see; taking the focus away from the results of experiments and bringing the scientific process to the fore.

So much emphasis is placed on the final product of science: the polished, de-humanised scientific paper. But, as anyone working in a lab knows, there’s much more to scientific research than journal articles.
Inside Knowledge is a blog by four Science Communications students at Imperial College, London, who are embedding themselves with the BLAST lab at Imperial. They want to explore the unique aspects of the BLAST lab’s research, but also those routines and dilemmas which will be recognisable in any modern scientific research. Using a range of media they will highlight these and create a unique multimedia diary of their time with the lab.
The BLAST lab is a great example of cross-disciplinary scientific work. They bring together diverse backgrounds, including medics, physicists, bioengineers, military personnel and research PhDs, to carry out vital research. More about their work will be revealed over time!
The Inside Knowledge team:
Lizzie Crouch- Nerd and proud! After graduating with a degree in Physiology from Oxford University in 2007, Lizzie spent almost three years working in science television production, before taking the plunge and returning to student life to study for a Masters in Science Communication. As well as talking about science (a lot), she is also a keen sportswoman, and can be found most weekends in the winter wielding a lacrosse stick!
Ben Good – Having completed a degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Southampton Ben is currently studying for a Masters in Science Communication at Imperial College London. Outside of science he takes up spontaneous new hobbies, accumulates useless facts and plays the guitar.
Anna Perman – Anna finds it very hard to make decisions. After deliberating about whether to study English Literature or Biology at university, she finally went for the latter. While at Bristol University, she specialized in genetics, but spent as much time reading, writing and broadcasting about the arts as she did in a lab. She is now on Imperial college’s Science Communication MSc and is loving every nerdy minute of it!
David Robertson
The token Aussie of the team, David’s keen on making multimedia. He completed an Environmental Science degree in 2007, before working in a chemistry research lab for three years. A 5-month wilderness travel adventure in 2010 preceded the long jump to London to study a Masters in Science Communication. The relocation experiment seems to be working so far…
