Three new articles published this week in PLOS Medicine:

In a cohort of more than 500,000 individuals who experienced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Japan, Akihito Hagihara and colleagues investigate whether administration of lactated Ringer’s solution is associated with survival and functional outcomes.

Using digital retinal photography and slit lamp examination in a population-based sample in the Nakuru District of Kenya, Andrew Bastawrous and colleagues determined the prevalence of age-related macular degeneration in adults 50 years and older.

Roman Carrasco and colleagues propose a “cap and trade” system for global health involving a cost-effectiveness criterion and a DALY (Disability-Adjusted Life Year) global credit market, mirroring global carbon emission permits trading markets to mitigate climate change.
