This week in PLoS Medicine, five new articles were published, including a perspective on insecticide treated nets and their effects on neonatal mortality.

Using the Nurses’ Health Study, Qi Sun and colleagues examine whether moderate alcohol intake is associated with overall health and well-being among women who survive to older age.

Stephen Lim and colleagues report findings from a multi-country analysis of household survey data on the association between possession of insecticide-treated mosquito nets and child mortality and parasitemia.

Thomas Eisele and Richard Steketee discuss new research that examined the association of insecticide-treated nets with the reduction of P. falciparum prevalence in children under 5 and all-cause post-neonatal mortality.

In advance of the September 2011 UN Summit on non-communicable diseases (NCDs), Rebecca Dirks and colleagues identify lessons from the AIDS epidemic that can inform the response to the growing epidemic of NCDs.

Rodrigo Moreno-Serra and colleagues argue that new metrics are needed to better inform policy development on financial protection in health.
