This week in PLoS Medicine, three new articles are published, including the beginning of our series on water and sanitation.

Patrina Caldwell and colleagues conducted a systematic review and report that strategies focusing on increasing potential trial participants’ awareness of the specific health problem, and engaged them, appeared to increase recruitment to RCTs.

As the first article in a four-part PLoS Medicine series on water and sanitation, Jamie Bartram and Sandy Cairncross argue that the massive burden of ill health associated with poor hygiene, sanitation, and water supply demands more attention from health professionals and policymakers.

In the second article in a four-part PLoS Medicine series on water and sanitation, Paul Hunter and colleagues argue that much more effort is needed to improve access to safe and sustainable water supplies.
