It all started with Brian Switek (author of the marvelous paleontology book Written in Stone: Evolution, the Fossil Record, and Our Place in Nature) pointing out on Twitter this YouTube time-lapse video of ants completely dismantling a dead gecko:
“Gross but amazing,” Brian wrote, adding parenthetically, “Urge to add ‘Yakety Sax’ soundrack.”
All seasoned users of the Web know that saying such a thing on the interwebs is the equivalent of staring in a mirror and repeating the name “Candyman” three times: it summons up the demon from the depths. In no time at all, science writer Colin Schultz had opened up a veritable Benny Ant-Hill of comedy and made it so:
But, of course, that wasn’t going to be the end of it. And sure enough, Alex Wild of Myrmecos (whose insect photography is spectacular—go to www.alexanderwild.com and see!) decided to play video Frankenstein and undo the damage by giving us ants building a gecko from scratch:
It’s like herpetological Lego.
