Introducing Dr. Travis Saunders!

Dear Obesity Panacea readers,

Just a quick note to let everyone know that Travis successfully defended his doctoral thesis Friday morning! As all of us expected, he made it look extremely easy, and defended his work in typically composed Travis fashion. From prior experience, this was one of the smoothest defenses I’ve ever seen – no questions came as a surprise to Travis, the mood was very lighthearted, and the committee did more congratulating Travis on his wonderful work than grilling him on any specific details. It was a pleasure to watch. I’m sure Travis will shortly share his thoughts on the process.

It is crazy to think back to 2006 when Travis first started his Master’s work in the same lab I was doing my PhD – can you imagine he didn’t even know what visceral fat was! Oh, how far he has come. Over the years at Queen’s, and most recently at the University of Ottawa, seeing Travis develop as a researcher has been wonderful. He’s been an extremely productive academic, all the while maintaining a good work-life balance – a rare feat in academia. Today is the culmination of all those years of hard work, and I couldn’t be prouder of his accomplishment. He was there to see me defend my PhD in 2010 and it meant the world to me – I’m very glad to have been here to see him take the same step.

Now please join me in congratulating him!

Peter

On behalf of all of us at PLOS, congratulations Travis. Well Done! And if you managed to post consistently high quality blog posts en route to your PhD, what shall we expect next? A bit of rest and then…

Thanks everyone (and especially Peter!) for the kind words. Peter came all the way from Toronto to watch the defense, and it was great to have someone there who has been such a good friend throughout all of grad school!

  11. Congratulations, Dr. Saunders! You were a great editor when I wrote for the blog (I hope to do so again!), but I had no idea you were a great defender of your thesis—that rocks! You are amazing…. When can we read it?
