Kelli Hayes, a graduate student in my Neuroanthropology class, brought this wonderful brain cake in for everyone yesterday.
She made the frosting from marshmallow fondant – marshmallows, powdered sugar, and water – providing an icing that can gyri. And it was strawberry cake inside!
Kelli combined two recipes in making her cake:
How to Make an Anatomically Correct Brain Cake
Just a note, there are plenty of fun images of zombie-style brain cake on the second site (even though Kelli drew more on the first recipe for anatomical accuracy).
The cake was great, Kelli. Thanks!

Hilarious Dan. If you hover over the “authors” you’ll note the first is Jvoytek. My wife wrote the article years ago when she made the cake for my PhD advisor’s birthday (hence the chocolate chip “ECoG grid” electrodes).
What a great connection! And I was wondering about the chocolate chips!
I hope, to be anatomically correct, there was an almond in the medial temporal lobe.
