Cultural Neuroscience and Cultural Psychiatry

Summer Institute in Cultural Neuroscience (SICN) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Deadline: March 15, 2013

SICN is an annual two-week program that provides graduate students as well as faculty with an overview of core topics and recent research developments related to cultural neuroscience in order to prepare them to start their own empirical investigations. Attendees will have an opportunity to develop their own research ideas in cultural neuroscience through interactions with peers and faculty members. July 15-26, 2013.

Summer Program in Social and Cultural Psychiatry at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

This summer program offers many different options for workshops and courses. Topics include Psychiatric Epidemiology, Critical Neuroscience, Qualitative Research Methods in Social and Cultural Psychiatry, and others. Program dates and deadlines vary depending on which program you’re interested in.

Anthropology Methods

The 2013 Anthropology Methods Mall has information about six, NSF-supported opportunities for methods training in cultural anthropology.

1. SCRM (Short Courses on Research Methods. For those with a Ph.D.) Deadline: Feb 15, 2013

This program is for cultural anthropologists who already have a Ph.D. Two five-day courses are offered during summer 2013 at the Duke University Marine Lab in Beaufort, North Carolina.

2. SIRD (Summer Institute on Research Design. For graduate students) Deadline: March 1, 2013

This is an intensive, three-week course for graduate students in cultural anthropology who are preparing their doctoral research proposals. The 2013 course runs from July 14-August 3, 2013 at the Duke University Marine Laboratory. (Instructors: Jeffrey Johnson, Susan Weller, Amber Wutich, and H. Russell Bernard.)

3. EFS (Ethnographic Field School. For graduate students) Deadline: Feb 15, 2013

This program is a five-week field school in ethnographic methods and community-based participatory research. It is open to graduate students in cultural anthropology. The 2013 field school runs from July 7-August 10, 2013 in Tallahassee, Florida.

4. SIMA (Smithsonian Institution Summer Institute in Museum Anthropology. For graduate students) Deadline: March 1, 2013

This program is open to graduate students in cultural anthropology and related, interdisciplinary programs (Indigenous Studies, Folklore, etc.) who are interested in using museum collections as a data source and who are preparing for research careers. The course runs from June 24-July 19, 2013 at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC.

5. WRMA (Conference Workshops on Research Methods in Anthropology. For all anthropologists)

This program offers one-day workshops in conjunction with national meetings of anthropologists. Click HERE for information about the next workshops at the meeting of the Society for Applied Anthropology in Denver, Colorado, March 19-23, 2013.

6. DCRM (Distance Courses in Research Methods in Anthropology)

The University of Florida offers a series of online courses on research methods in cultural anthropology. The courses carry graduate credit and are open to upper division undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals. The emphasis in each course is on skills for collecting and analyzing the many kinds of data that anthropologists work with.

Four digital learning courses are offered in 2013. Each course has 12 hours of lecture and 33 hours of online, interactive instruction. Courses are limited to 18 participants.
