A petition to the White House is gathering signatures to bring the US President’s attention to the need for public access to publicly funded research. This would mean a major expansion of the Public Access Policy developed by the National Institute of Health, and that the results of federally funded research would be freely available to researchers, caregivers, patients and many other stakeholders, instead of locked behind pay walls.
PLoS’s CEO, Peter Jerram, spoke out last week, urging readers to sign on and support public access. As I write this post, the petition has just over 20,000 signatures of the 25,000 needed before June 19th. If you haven’t already signed, please join the thousands of voices already requesting that the administration make this a serious priority.
